23rd December 2024 – (New York) Hailey Welch, known as “Hawk Tuah,” may not be the last celebrity to endorse a faltering cryptocurrency project, as the recent collapse of her token, HAWK, raises significant questions about celebrity involvement in the crypto space.
With Bitcoin currently trading above $100,000 and pro-crypto Donald Trump poised for a potential return to the presidency next year, the crypto landscape is likely to attract even more celebrity endorsements in 2025. However, many Australians remain puzzled about the reasons behind the HAWK token’s dramatic fall and whether Welch had any real control over the project.
Welch addressed the situation on social media after HAWK plummeted over 90% within hours of its launch on 4th December. The 22-year-old stated she is working with legal counsel to “help uncover the truth, hold the responsible parties accountable, and resolve this matter.” Initially, the token boasted a market value of $490 million, but a subsequent sell-off reduced this figure to approximately $26.4 million.
Experts suggest that when celebrities promote crypto projects, they may lack a thorough understanding of the underlying tokenomics—the economic frameworks governing cryptocurrencies. Often, these endorsements serve merely as a promotional facade, with celebrities receiving payment without a deep engagement in the projects they are endorsing. As the crypto market continues to evolve, the intersection of celebrity culture and cryptocurrency will likely remain a contentious topic.
