23rd December 2024 – (Hong Kong) The Hong Kong Immigration Department reported that nearly 1.14 million individuals crossed the border on December 22, with over 590,000 departing and more than 540,000 entering. Among those leaving, approximately 400,000 were Hong Kong residents. In terms of arrivals, around 370,000 were local residents, alongside over 135,000 from mainland China and nearly 40,000 international travellers.
Freddy Yip, President of the Hong Kong Travel Agent Owners Association, stated on 23rd December that the Christmas period traditionally marks a peak travel season. He noted an increasing variety of travel options available to citizens, with many opting for cruise travel in the wake of the pandemic. This year’s Christmas holiday, which includes an extended break of nine days when combined with weekends and a three-day leave, is expected to see a rise in the number of residents travelling abroad compared to last year.
With airlines restoring capacity, ticket prices are anticipated to decline, although adjustments to tour package costs may be limited due to local operational expenses. Timothy Chui, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Tourism Association, commented that the short-haul travel market remains stable, with popular destinations such as Taiwan, Japan, and Thailand continuing to attract Hong Kong travellers. He also highlighted the increasing appeal of mainland cities, which have enhanced their infrastructure and services.
Additionally, starting 5th January, 2025, the Hong Kong section of the high-speed rail will introduce long-distance services to Xi’an North, increasing connectivity with three new city stations. Chui noted that rail travel tends to be more cost-effective than air travel, allowing travel agencies to develop attractive packages, with the first tours to Xi’an and Luoyang expected to launch on the opening day of the new routes.
