23rd December 2024 – (Hong Kong) Hong Kong’s leading Catholic figure has emphasised the importance of pursuing justice through empathy rather than vengeance in his Christmas message. Cardinal Stephen Chow, head of the Catholic diocese, addressed the faithful on Monday, urging them to embrace the promise of joy and hope that Christmas brings, even in the face of challenging circumstances.

Chow acknowledged the difficulties currently affecting both Hong Kong and the wider world, including a slower-than-expected economic recovery, escalating geopolitical tensions, and rising mental health issues, particularly among the young and elderly. He highlighted the need for renewed hope in the local and global economy as essential for overcoming these challenges.

With a focus on love and hope, the Cardinal expressed a commitment to supporting marginalised communities who often feel unwanted and abandoned. This includes individuals such as prisoners seeking a new beginning, couples uncertain about their future and family planning, young people struggling to find reasons for optimism, and elderly residents experiencing loneliness.

He emphasised that supporting the weaker members of society is not only beneficial for those individuals but also crucial for future generations. By strengthening these communities, a better present can be created, fostering a hopeful future for all.
