23rd December 2024 – (Hong Kong) Dr. Vanessa Kwan Hau-chi, a Hong Kong physician convicted of manslaughter in the death of Latin dance instructor Josephine Lee Kar-ying, has had her request to modify bail conditions denied by the court. Lee died in 2014 following a liposuction procedure at the Regrowth Hair Transplant Centre in Tsim Sha Tsui, which Kwan was overseeing. She was sentenced to six years in prison for her role in the incident.

Kwan is currently appealing her conviction and has received permission to pursue this legal challenge. While on bail, she is prohibited from leaving Hong Kong. However, she sought permission to travel to the UK for two months to sell a property, intending to raise funds for her cancer treatment and to support her parents.

During a court hearing today, the judge expressed sympathy for Kwan’s circumstances but concluded that she could manage the sale through real estate agents or lawyers, thus denying her request. The appeal hearing is scheduled for 23rd July, 2025, and is expected to last two days.
