Safety concerns raised as tourists overload airport bus with luggage

25th December 2024 – (Hong Kong) Recent reports from social media have highlighted a concerning incident involving approximately 50 tourists who overloaded an airport bus, stacking their luggage on the seats in a precarious manner. The situation escalated when the bus made a turn, resulting in several bags falling and prompting questions about accountability for any potential injuries.

A user on the Threads platform shared their firsthand account of the event, which took place on 23rd December. She described how the bus, departing from the airport terminal, was filled beyond capacity as tourists boarded and placed their bags on the seats. The luggage racks were already full, and numerous bags were crammed into the lower seats, stacked haphazardly without any securing straps.

The user expressed concern for safety, stating, “I understand they want to get on the bus, but stacking the luggage like that is incredibly dangerous.” Shortly after the bus began moving, bags began to tumble as the driver navigated a turn. “It’s frustrating; it’s not just about wanting to get on. If someone gets hurt, who is responsible?” they lamented.

Many online commentators echoed these concerns, questioning why the driver continued to operate the bus under such hazardous conditions. The original poster clarified that the driver had reservations but was compelled by the station manager to allow the tourists to board.

This incident follows a trend observed in recent months, where Mainland tour groups appear to be using regular buses as if they were chartered coaches. In a similar case, a bus in Causeway Bay encountered a group attempting to bring over 50 pieces of luggage on board, further highlighting the issue of overloaded public transport.

Passengers have voiced their outrage at the lack of consideration for safety, with comments ranging from “This is shocking” to “It’s terrifying, and could easily lead to broken glass if bags fall.” There is a growing consensus that drivers also bear responsibility when safety is compromised.

Some users suggested that passengers facing similar situations should report the matter to the authorities. “Tell the driver it’s unsafe to continue or call the police to report the bus number and the dangerous situation,” one commenter advised, underscoring the importance of adhering to regulations that prohibit luggage from occupying seats or obstructing aisles.
