27th December 2024 – (Frankfurt) German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier announced on Friday the dissolution of the Bundestag, the lower house of parliament, setting the stage for early federal elections. The snap elections are scheduled for 23rd February, following an agreement among major political parties.
This decision follows Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s loss of a vote of confidence on 16th December. In the wake of this setback, Scholz recommended the dissolution of the Bundestag.
The Chancellor’s difficulties began in November when he lost his parliamentary majority after Finance Minister Christian Lindner and other members of the Free Democratic Party exited the ruling coalition. Their departure stemmed from prolonged disputes over tax distribution, economic stimulus measures, and investment funding.
In his announcement, Steinmeier emphasised the necessity for a capable government with a dependable parliamentary majority, particularly in these challenging times. He asserted that new elections are the most appropriate course of action for the good of the country.
