28th December 2024 – (Hong Kong) The popular Japanese pop duo YOASOBI held a two-day concert at the AsiaWorld-Expo on 26th and 27th December, but the event was marred by controversy when a male fan was removed by security after standing and waving a glow stick in support during the opening performance. The incident occurred just 15 minutes into the show.

As fans gathered for the second concert, many expressed outrage at the security’s actions, labelling them excessive and absurd. One attendee, highlighted that standing to cheer known as “wotagei” is a common cultural practice in Japan and noted that the concert’s terms and conditions did not explicitly prohibit standing. He questioned the necessity of such a drastic response, suggesting that other methods of communication could have been employed instead.

Another concert-goer, echoed these sentiments, stating that the removal of fans could harm Hong Kong’s international reputation. Legislative Council member, Doreen Kong, commented on the rarity of such incidents, warning that if the affected individual was a tourist, they might be deterred from visiting Hong Kong again.

Prior to the concert, large crowds had formed outside the venue, with fans eager to purchase merchandise and capture memories with the concert’s elaborate set pieces.

The situation has raised questions about the balance between ensuring safety and maintaining an enjoyable atmosphere for fans, particularly as Hong Kong seeks to position itself as a vibrant hub for international events.
