28th Deember 2024 – (Hong Kong) Hong Kong consumers are enthusiastic about venturing into mainland China, and as a result, several well-known Mainland dining brands are seizing the opportunity to expand their market presence in the territory. Luckin Coffee, known for its “affordable and quality” offerings, officially announced its entry into the Hong Kong market, launching five outlets today (28th) at Mira Place in Tsim Sha Tsui, MCP Central in Tseung Kwan O, New Town Mall in Mong Kok, Shatin Centre, and Des Voeux Road Central in Sheung Wan. The chain plans to operate primarily as a grab-and-go establishment, integrating mobile app ordering and payment to suit the fast-paced lifestyle of local consumers.
Earlier, a price list for the Hong Kong outlets was shared on social media, revealing that a standard Americano and latte are priced at HK$39, while the signature “Coconut Milk Latte” costs HK$42. Many netizens expressed shock at these prices, labelling them “astonishingly high,” and noted that the local version of Luckin Coffee does not seem to embody its intended affordable strategy. Compared to various local coffee chains, the pricing lacks a competitive edge.
In mainland China, the prices for a standard Americano and latte are set at RMB 23 and RMB 29, respectively. With discounts available through WeChat coupons, these drinks can often be purchased for as low as RMB 9.9. This means that the prices at the Hong Kong locations could be as much as 60% higher. It remains uncertain how competitive their promotions will be in the local market.
However, advertisements from Luckin Coffee indicate that new customers can enjoy an introductory offer of HK$15.9 for a cup of coffee through the app. This has led some consumers to speculate that the discount model in Hong Kong may mirror that of the mainland, suggesting that the listed prices are merely reference points, with actual prices potentially lower due to promotional coupons. Nonetheless, it remains to be seen whether these discounts will persist after the initial marketing push.
