28th December 2024 – (Hong Kong) A Mister Softee ice cream van operating in the popular tourist area of Tsim Sha Tsui has been issued a traffic summons, sparking widespread debate online. Critics are questioning the government’s repeated promotion of its “Tourism is everywhere in Hong Kong” initiative, suggesting that while officials encourage visitors to explore the city, they simultaneously penalise local vendors who cater to tourists.
Images shared on social media show the ice cream van receiving a ticket during peak business hours. Many netizens expressed frustration, noting that while the fine may not completely negate a day’s earnings, it raises significant concerns about the viability of such small businesses. One user lamented the uncertainty surrounding how many ice creams must be sold to recover from the financial setback caused by the penalty.
