28th December 2024 – (Hong Kong) A video circulating online has captured a middle-aged man riding what appears to be an electric bike through a busy tunnel in Hong Kong. The incident, which occurred in an unspecified tunnel, shows the man navigating left while surrounded by a stream of vehicles, including motorbikes, taxis, and buses.

The cyclist, dressed in red and equipped with numerous bags and luggage on his bike, was seen travelling at a relatively brisk pace, seemingly without pedalling. His bike was fitted with a rear-view mirror and a water holder, and he was wearing a helmet, suggesting some level of safety awareness.

The footage has spurred significant debate among social media users, with many questioning how the cyclist managed to enter the tunnel without being stopped. Comments ranged from criticisms of the tunnel management’s oversight to suggestions that the authorities were neglecting their responsibilities. Some netizens speculated about the cyclist’s background based on his appearance and the configuration of his bike, implying that he may be accustomed to riding on roads designed for left-hand traffic.

Under Cap. 368A Road Tunnels (Government) Regulations, it is prohibited for pedestrians and cyclists to enter government tunnels, with violators facing fines of up to HK$5,000 and potential imprisonment for up to six months. Additionally, the Road Traffic Ordinance stipulates penalties for reckless cycling, which could include fines and imprisonment for repeat offenders.
