29th December 2024 – (Gwangju) At least 28 people have been confirmed dead following a tragic incident involving a Jeju Air flight that crashed at Muan International Airport in South Korea. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, was carrying 175 passengers and six crew members on a flight from Bangkok, Thailand, when it veered off the runway during landing at approximately 9.07am local time.

Reports suggest the crash may have been caused by a malfunction in the landing gear, potentially following a bird strike. Eyewitness accounts and images shared by local media depicted flames and smoke engulfing parts of the aircraft as emergency services rushed to the scene.

As rescue operations commenced, two individuals were found alive, although authorities are still working to reach those trapped in the rear section of the plane. Initial firefighting efforts were focused on extinguishing the flames while rescuers prioritised evacuating passengers from the more accessible parts of the aircraft.

Acting President Choi Sung-mok, who assumed his role just days ago amid a political crisis, has ordered comprehensive rescue efforts. His office has expressed condolences to the families affected and emphasised the government’s commitment to supporting the ongoing rescue operations.

A spokesperson for Jeju Air indicated that the airline is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. The incident marks a significant tragedy for the airline and the nation, with local officials and emergency services working tirelessly to manage the aftermath.
