30th December 2024 – (Hong Kong) a Hong Kong man recently shared an extraordinary find on social media after receiving a 1948 one-cent coin, while making a purchase at a local supermarket. The incident occurred when the individual, while buying a bag of chips for HK$19.9, received the unusual coin as change after paying with a HK$20 note.
Upon inspecting the coin, the man noted its larger size compared to contemporary one-cent coins, prompting him to question its authenticity. His post quickly went viral, attracting the attention of knowledgeable netizens who recognised the coin’s historical value, which features the head of King George VI, the father of Queen Elizabeth II. Comments flooded in, with many expressing excitement over the find, declaring it a “treasure” and highlighting its potential worth.
Despite the enthusiasm surrounding the coin, the man seemed unaware of its significance, asking in disbelief if it was indeed valuable. Responses from the online community ranged from humorous jests to serious affirmations of its worth. Some indicated that similar coins are being sold for as much as HK$800 on secondary markets, representing an impressive appreciation in value.
