31st December 2024 – (New York) On Monday, New York State Governor Kathy Hochul unveiled enhanced security measures aimed at ensuring public safety throughout the holiday season. These measures involve increased staffing in partnership with the State Police, the New York National Guard, and other agencies, alongside heightened security at airports, bridges, tunnels, and public transport systems.

“As we gather in New York City to celebrate the start of a new year, I’ve directed our State agencies to take all necessary steps to ensure that New Yorkers and visitors can celebrate safely and peacefully,” Hochul stated. “Public safety is my top priority, and I am committed to using every tool at our disposal to keep you safe.”

To mitigate the risk of potential terrorist attacks, the New York State Office of Counter-Terrorism (OCT) has evaluated over 200 public infrastructure sites, including malls, universities, and airports, where large crowds typically gather.

The announcement highlighted that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), responsible for New York City’s public transit, has intensified patrols and surveillance efforts to enhance security. Recent incidents, including arson and a deadly brawl during a robbery attempt in the subway system, have heightened concerns regarding safety in public transport.

Governor Hochul urged the public to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings while attending holiday events. As large-scale celebrations are set to take place in New York City on Tuesday, a significant influx of tourists is expected.
