31st December 2024 – (Beijing) China has unveiled the world’s first mobile 5G base station, developed in collaboration with China Mobile Communications Group and the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). After passing rigorous tests, this state-of-the-art technology is now poised for deployment on the battlefield.
The mobile base station can provide unprecedented high-speed, low-latency, and secure data exchange services to at least 10,000 users within a 3km (1.8 mile) radius. Remarkably, even when PLA troops are advancing at speeds of 80km/h (50mph) in complex terrains, such as mountains or urban environments, the system can maintain an uninterrupted total throughput of 10 gigabits per second, with a latency of less than 15 milliseconds.
This technological advancement has cleared the way for the large-scale deployment of intelligent war machines. China is in the process of building the largest unmanned army on Earth, with powerful yet inexpensive drones, robotic dogs, and other unmanned combat platforms expected to outnumber human soldiers on future battlefields. However, existing military communication technologies have struggled to meet the massive data exchange demands among thousands of these robotic units.
The technology was detailed in a peer-reviewed paper published on 17th December in the Chinese journal Telecommunications Science, authored by a project team led by senior engineer Hou Jie with the PLA’s 31567 Unit.
