31st December 2024 – (Seoul) On 29th December, a tragic accident involving Jeju Air aircraft unfolded, leading to a catastrophic scene that first responders have described as “horrific and utterly devastating.” Eyewitness accounts from firefighters who attended the accident site reveal the overwhelming challenges they faced in identifying victims amid the wreckage.
Multiple firefighters, interviewed by the Korea Daily over two days, reiterated the brutal nature of the scene, emphasising the severe damage to bodies following the plane’s explosive crash. One seasoned firefighter, who previously worked on recovery efforts for the Sewol ferry disaster a decade ago, expressed deep sorrow, stating, “I can hardly find the words. It was terrifying; bodies were unrecognisable due to the extensive damage.”
Many victims lacked identifiable fingerprints, necessitating DNA analysis for identification. The local aviation authority reported that nearly all remains were severely fragmented, complicating the recovery process.
Approximately 500 firefighters were deployed to the crash site, working tirelessly for over ten hours to search for survivors and recover the deceased. One firefighter admitted the emotional toll, saying, “I couldn’t eat or rest properly after witnessing such devastation.” Another described the scene as “apocalyptic,” with debris and fuel scattered everywhere.
Among the victims were numerous locals, and many of the responding firefighters were from the same community, compounding their grief as they grappled with the loss of friends and neighbours while performing their duties.
