1st January 2025 – (Hong Kong) Recently, social media users have highlighted a growing issue in Tseung Kwan O, where streets become lined with tents during public holidays, obstructing pedestrian pathways. While some locals express concern over the aesthetic impact and potential obstruction of foot traffic, others show understanding towards domestic workers who lack alternative spaces to enjoy their time off.
One user remarked on the uncomfortable reality for these workers, questioning the comfort of sleeping on the streets beneath makeshift tents that transform sidewalks into what resembles a holiday retreat.
Critics argue that the authorities should implement regulations to manage this situation, while proponents suggest that if the areas remain tidy and non-disruptive, it is acceptable.
With over 300,000 domestic workers in Hong Kong, calls have been made for the community to develop more facilities for their leisure and socialising needs, eliminating the necessity for street camping during festive periods.
