1st January 2025 – (Kyiv) On Wednesday morning, residents of Kyiv experienced the sounds of suspected anti-missile system interceptions as the Ukrainian air force detected ballistic missile threats. The Kyiv City Military Administration confirmed that air defence systems were actively engaged in the city and surrounding areas.
This escalation follows a Russian aerial attack on Tuesday that targeted Kyiv and other regions with multiple missiles and drones. The Ukrainian air force reported a missile threat at 3am (0100 GMT), with explosions heard shortly thereafter. A subsequent missile alert was issued at 8am, leading to additional explosions in the capital. Debris from intercepted missiles fell in the Darnytskyi district, but authorities reported no casualties or significant damage.
In the northeastern Sumy region, strikes near the city of Shostka damaged 12 residential buildings and two educational facilities, according to Mayor Mykola Noha. He also mentioned the destruction of several social infrastructure objects, though details were not provided.
The Russian Defense Ministry claimed successful strikes on a Ukrainian air base and a gunpowder factory. The ongoing conflict has severely impacted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, with around half of it reportedly destroyed, leading to widespread electricity blackouts.
Despite support from Western allies providing air defense systems, Russia has intensified its strategy of overwhelming these defenses with large-scale missile and drone attacks. This comes amid uncertainty regarding U.S. military support as President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office next month, raising concerns about the future of assistance to Kyiv.
In a recent development, U.S. President Joe Biden announced an additional $2.5 billion in military aid to Ukraine as his administration moves swiftly to bolster support before the transition of power. Throughout the year, Ukraine has retaliated with a series of missile and drone attacks against Russian positions.
On Tuesday, Russia’s Defense Ministry reported intercepting 68 Ukrainian drones across various regions. In the Smolensk area, drone fragments reportedly fell on an oil depot, igniting a fire. In Crimea, local authorities claimed that Russian defenses shot down four aerial drones and sank two uncrewed boats.
Additionally, Ukraine’s Military Intelligence Directorate announced that one of its naval drones successfully shot down a Russian Mi-8 helicopter, marking a significant advancement in drone warfare capabilities. The attack occurred near Cape Tarkhankut, where another helicopter was damaged but managed to return to an airfield.
