3rd January 2025 – (Zhangzhou) Authorities in Longhai District, Zhangzhou, confirmed on 2nd January that Lin Shenmu, Fujian’s oldest resident, passed away in her home on New Year’s Day. She was 123 years old, having been born on 18th June, 1902, in Xibei Village, Haicheng Town. Lin’s life was marked by hardships, including poverty and wartime struggles, but she experienced the tranquility of her later years.

In 2023, reporters from local media outlet The Paper visited Lin’s home to explore the secrets behind her remarkable longevity. Although Lin had lost her sight, her hearing remained sharp. She was the mother of three sons and four daughters, with her youngest son, Huang Chunfeng, taking care of her.

Despite her advanced age and limited mobility, Lin managed her daily activities independently. During interviews, she greeted reporters warmly, showcasing her friendly demeanor. Huang reminisced that his mother maintained a contented outlook on life, never engaging in conflicts. Even in challenging times, she would say, “There are no obstacles in life that cannot be overcome.”

Lin had a hearty appetite, often able to consume seven dumplings at once. Huang noted that she rarely fell ill and had never been hospitalized. Her diet primarily consisted of easily digestible porridge, complemented by traditional morning tea.

When asked about her secrets to longevity, Lin humorously replied, “I don’t know.” Huang shared that his mother believed, “Being able to eat, drink, and sleep is a blessing.” He described her as a traditional farmer, uneducated and unaware of health trends, who lived a simple life without striving or worry. This natural approach to life may have contributed to her impressive lifespan.
