6th January 2025 – (Solihull) Thousands of Hong Kong nationals have made the decision to settle in Solihull, near Birmingham, following the introduction of a new BN(O) visa by the U.K. government. This influx has led to the establishment of vibrant communities as these newcomers seek a fresh start.

The local council estimates that between 4,500 and 5,000 Hongkongers have relocated to Solihull, joining the approximately 180,000 who have settled in various parts of the U.K., including London and Manchester. Many emigrated for political reasons after the imposition of a stringent national security law by the Chinese government in 2020.

Every Wednesday, a gathering of Hong Kong expats convenes at 852 Spaces Cafe in Solihull, where they engage in board games and practice English with local volunteers. This community space aims to provide a safe environment for recent arrivals to connect and support one another.

Residents appreciate the area’s schools and low crime rates. Some have expressed a preference for the more relaxed educational system in the UK, contrasting it with the high-pressure environment of Hong Kong. Others have found solace in the peaceful atmosphere of Solihull, which has been described as friendly and welcoming.

Organisations such as Solihull’s Methodist Church and U.K. Welcomes Refugees offer essential support to newcomers in navigating housing, healthcare, and job-seeking. While some are finding employment opportunities, others face challenges in securing positions aligned with their previous careers.

New establishments, such as the Black Orange café, are enhancing the local culinary scene with unique Hong Kong flavours. Owners who initially settled in Birmingham opted for Solihull due to its affordability and softer water, which they believe is beneficial for both drinking and maintenance.
