6th January 2025 – (Ottawa) Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will hold a press conference at 10.45am local time (11.45pm Hong Kong time) today to announce his resignation as leader of the Liberal Party, according to sources speaking to CBC News under anonymity. Trudeau is expected to remain in his role until a successor is chosen.
The announcement comes amid growing pressure from a significant number of Liberal MPs, who have been vocal about their calls for him to step down. Regional caucuses from Atlantic Canada, Quebec, and Ontario, along with at least two dozen individual MPs, have expressed their desire for new leadership.
The press conference will take place at Rideau Cottage.
