8th January 2025 – (Beijing) Deng Li officially commenced his role as China’s ambassador to France on Tuesday, succeeding former envoy Lu Shaye. Having arrived in Paris on Monday, Deng presented his credentials to French protocol chief Frédéric Pied as part of the formalities.

In a statement issued by the Chinese embassy in France, Deng expressed his commitment to advancing the “solid foundation and broad prospects” of China-France relations. His appointment comes at a crucial time, coinciding with the anticipated visit of France’s newly appointed Prime Minister, François Bayrou, to China. This visit aims to address ongoing trade disputes, particularly concerning brandy exports to China, the world’s second-largest economy.

The announcement of Deng’s appointment was made by French President Emmanuel Macron during an annual conference with French ambassadors, although the specifics regarding Bayrou’s visit were not disclosed. At 60 years old, Deng brings significant diplomatic experience, having previously served as vice foreign minister with expertise in North African and European affairs.
