About The City of Edinburgh Council

The local government authority for The City of Edinburgh, The City of Edinburgh Council, was created in 1996. The council came into being under the Local Government Act of 1994. Before 1368, The City of Edinburgh was run from a Tolbooth. Tolbooth was a municipal establishment of the Scottish Burgh, and it provided council meeting chambers, a jail, and a courthouse. The Tolbooth of Edinburgh, back then, housed the Scottish parliament and the Edinburgh town council too. The Tolbooth was cramped by the 1560s, and it was then that Queen Mary requested for its extensive restoration. The Edinburgh Town Council paid for the new structure by 1639, and the same came to be known as Parliament house. As of today, the Council is headed by the Lord Provost of Edinburgh along with the 6 Bailies, who are appointed by the council. Edinburgh councils and traditions still date back to the days of Edinburgh Corporation. The council meets in the Edinburgh City Chambers to maintain and hold properties of the corporation, including the Lauriston Castle, the Assembly Rooms, Church Hill Theatre, etc. The council has been modernized to take care of the primary municipal functions for the city.

The City of Edinburgh Council is in charge of functional obligations towards the residents of the city. The council is responsible for benefits and grants, council tax, roads, parking, housing, planning & building standards, social care, health, schools, and more. In the environmental assistance domain, the council takes care of assisted bin collection, bulky waste uplift, communal bin management, garden waste collection, missed bin collection and recycling. Residents can register birth, register marriages and civil partnerships, or register a death with the council. Other functions taken care of by The City of Edinburgh Council include change of business address, business rates management, workplace registration, food premises registration, etc. Residents can also complain to the council regarding anti-social behavior, benefit fraud, trading standard issues, bonfire problem, dog fouling, dust, fly posting, light nuisance, litter, water leaks, among others.

The official website of the council is designed to take care of primary council services online. The list of online services is mentioned on the website. The best way to utilize the functions is by creating an account first. You will need a Mygov.scot account to help track requests and make new ones. There are separate pages for you to pay the taxes, report issues, or make requests. The website has listed various helpline numbers for people who seek direct communication with the council authorities.
