14.20 Oakleaf Builders Sussex Mares’ Maiden Hurdle

Despite being 0-9 in this sphere, the opening race is an excellent opportunity for the largely consistent DAMEOFTHECOTSWOLDS to open her account. A reproduction of either her latest runner-up effort at Worcester or at Cheltenham in April should see her too good for these.

Tips: Dameofthecotswolds

14.50 Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk Novices’ Handicap Chase

Belgarum returned as a decisive winner last time out, but the grade-dropping ALMOST GOTAWAY could offer better value. Nicky Martin’s top-weight has won three times over hurdles and defied a 1lb higher mark when last successful in this grade. He should be extremely competitive.

Tips: Almost Gotaway

15.20 Happy 65th Birthday Peter Mellett Juvenile Hurdle

CHARACTER TESTING is the highest rated of these on the Flat and should be able to take a step forward from his hurdling debut third-place finish at Fontwell. Rogue King is the obvious danger, but the former could improve past him if he can put that latest experience to good use.

Tips: Character Testing

15.50 Friends & Family Remembering Norman Sharpe Handicap Hurdle

AUCUNRISQUE has not scored since winning the 2023 Betfair Hurdle off an 8lb higher mark, but he goes well when fresh, and he’s a C&D winner off a 2lb higher mark. That victory here came in a stronger contest, so if he can get back to anything near his best, Chris Gordon’s eight-year-old should be hard to beat.

Tips: Aucunrisque

16.20 Peter J. Taylor Memorial Handicap Chase

ALIEN STORM should develop into a decent chaser. The six-year-old has course-winning form and has performed very well on various occasions at a higher level over the smaller obstacles, including third here in a hotter race on his penultimate start. He could be a major player on his chase debut.

Tips: Alien Storm

16.50 Strong Flavours Handicap Hurdle

SAMI BEAR could only manage sixth last time out after a late mistake, but a repeat of his previous second should see him in the mix. He’s 2lb below his last winning mark and is equipped with first-time cheekpieces. His best form would see him very competitive, so he’s given a chance.

Tips: Sami Bear
