About Toronto Police Service
The Toronto Police Service (TPS) is responsible for law and order in Toronto, Canada. The police force was formed in the year 1834 and currently employs more than 5,000 officers. Besides daily urban policing, the force covers criminal and public order matters within Toronto, Ontario. The fourth largest municipal police service in North America is governed by the Toronto Police Services Board and Toronto City Council. Operations are managed by the 17 divisions within the TPS. The unit divisions include Business & Intelligence, Crime Scene, Highway Patrol, Emergency Task Force, Course Services, Communications, Organized Crime Control Command, Specialized Criminal Investigations, Transit Bureau, and Transportation Bureau. As for the ranks, you have the Chief of Police on top, followed by Deputy Chief of Police, Staff Superintendent, Superintendent, Inspector, Staff Sergeant, Sergeant and Constable.

There are close to 16 divisions spread across the city. You can locate one nearest to your address by street number or name on the website. Visit any of the nearest division to report crime, accident or for victim services. Domestic violence, financial crime, sexual crime and missing persons complaint can also be reported by calling the helpline number. A number of services can be availed online without visiting the nearest station. You can file a police report online for theft, fraud, damage to property/vehicle or driving complaint. The Citizen Online Report Entry (CORE) is designed to monitor these incidents as well as crime or domestic violence. Additionally, you can submit requests for background checks and track applications online.

Note that if applying to change your name, you may be required to submit a police record check along with your application. You can print and fill out the Name Change Record Check form and submit it via mail or in-person to Toronto Police headquarters. Online applications will receive a response in 7-10 business days. A confirmation number will be displayed if the application has been accepted. The Criminal Record Check document or Clearance Letter will indicate if a person has any criminal convictions. Involved in a collision? You can visit a Collision Reporting Center (CRF) to report the incident. There are currently two Collision Reporting Centres – East Collision Reporting Centre and North Collision Reporting Centre. If there is a fatality, injury or damage, you are advised to report the incident immediately so insurance services can also be availed in a timely fashion.
