22nd December 2024 – (Hong Kong) The Sha Tin Police District received reports on 16th December regarding a series of burglaries at two relatively isolated secondary schools. The suspect allegedly scaled the school fences and broke windows to gain entry, stealing frozen snacks and other items. Following a thorough review of CCTV footage and intelligence analysis, authorities identified a 22-year-old unemployed man as the prime suspect. He was arrested on 22nd December by the Sha Tin division’s special task force on suspicion of burglary, linked to six incidents, which also included thefts from a local sports ground’s kiosk, staff lounge, and restaurant.
During the operation, police recovered approximately HK$25,000 worth of stolen goods, including vouchers from two chain stores, cash, and various suspected burglary tools such as screwdrivers, hammers, pliers, and gloves. The suspect is currently in custody.
Chief Inspector Ho Man-chung of the Sha Tin Criminal Investigation Department indicated that the arrested individual appeared to have acted alone, employing blunt objects to shatter glass windows or pry open padlocks. The targeted schools, which are situated in remote areas, have outdated facilities and lack security alarms.
As the year-end approaches, police have urged the community to remain vigilant and enhance security measures for homes and businesses. They advise against storing significant amounts of cash or valuables on-premises to mitigate the risk of becoming targets for thieves. The police plan to strengthen patrols and maintain close communication with local stakeholders to identify crime hotspots and ensure the safety of residents’ property. Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious activity immediately.
Authorities emphasise that burglary is a serious offence, with a maximum penalty of 14 years’ imprisonment under Hong Kong’s Theft Ordinance.
