ESMERAY looked like she needed the run when she finished third in a better race than this on her return at Pontefract. With that run under her belt, Ralph Beckett’s filly should be hard to beat, while the likes of ROXANNE, CITY OF YORK, and TARBAAN head the list of possible dangers in the opener.

AIMERIC made it three wins from his last six starts with an easy victory at Beverley and must be included. However, BASE NOTE and GLOBAL HEAT have the ability to beat the favourite if they can perform to their best. Both of them are very good horses on their day and should outrun their odds.

14.25 William Hill Oaks Trial Fillies’ Stakes (Listed)
TREASURE hit the line very strongly when she made a successful debut at Nottingham, and, with plenty more to come, she could give DANIELLE the most to think about. The latter cruised to success at Wetherby when last spotted and has to be shortlisted. I cannot see past these two.

15.00 William Hill Lingfield Derby Trial Stakes (Listed)
ILLINOIS should have too many qualities for Defiance. He has the best form, his stable is in great form, and the return to better ground will suit him. If he performs to his best, I cannot see him being beaten here. IMPERIAL SOVEREIGN only just failed to keep his unbeaten record intact last time out and could run well on his turf debut.

15.35 William Hill Chartwell Fillies’ Stakes (Fillies’ & Mares’ Group 3)
Given her record when fresh (two wins from two starts) and the fact that she acquitted herself in a handful of Group 1s last year, REMARQUEE can make a winning return to action. She has to concede weight and fitness to Great Generation but her form is top-class in comparison to that rival, and the ground will suit her. She’s the best horse in the race, and she can hopefully outclass her rivals.

16.10 William Hill Lingfield Handicap
The form of SKY WARRIOR’s win at Doncaster when beating a 90-rated horse suggests he is thrown in here off a mark of 90. He should be all the better from his comeback run at Kempton and must go well. SOUTH KENSINGTON has some useful form to her name and could be competitive.
