25th December 2024 – (Beijing) China has expressed strong disapproval and opposition to what it describes as blatant attacks and vilification of Hong Kong’s legitimate law enforcement by certain countries. Mao Ning, a spokesperson for the Chinese foreign ministry, made the comments on Wednesday, urging nations to cease their support for anti-China elements.

The Hong Kong police announced on 24th December the issuance of wanted notices for seven individuals, including Kwok Fung-yee, who have fled overseas. These individuals are accused of engaging in destabilising activities that threaten Hong Kong’s development and social stability. Mao’s remarks followed criticism from several foreign governments regarding these actions.

Mao asserted that these individuals have long sought to undermine national security and Hong Kong’s fundamental interests, actions she deemed as crossing the critical boundary of “one country, two systems.” She emphasised that the Hong Kong police’s enforcement measures are in accordance with the Law on Safeguarding National Security and represent necessary steps to uphold the rule of law, protect national sovereignty, and ensure long-term stability in the region.

According to Mao, such law enforcement actions align with international law and customary practices, and she reiterated that Hong Kong’s affairs are internal matters, free from foreign interference. She called on relevant countries to respect China’s sovereignty and urged them to refrain from supporting anti-China protests.

“Attempts to interfere in Hong Kong’s affairs under the guise of human rights and freedom are destined to fail,” Mao stated, asserting that spreading negative rhetoric about the city would yield no positive outcomes.
