23rd December 2024 – (Washington) U.S. Congressional-Executive Commission on China (CECC) 2024 Annual Report, which accused the Chinese government of undermining the “One Country, Two Systems” principle in Hong Kong and Macao, Mao Ning, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, rebuked the claims as politically motivated and lacking credibility.
Mao stated on Monday that the CECC repeatedly publishes reports that distort the human rights situation in the two Special Administrative Regions (SARs), expressing China’s deep dissatisfaction and firm opposition to these assertions.
She highlighted that since the return of Hong Kong and Macao to China, the “One Country, Two Systems” principle has led to significant economic and social progress, asserting that the rights and freedoms of their residents are fully protected. Mao claimed that this principle has demonstrated its institutional advantages and vitality, contributing to long-term prosperity and stability in the regions.
Mao reiterated the importance of maintaining this system, stating that it supports national rejuvenation and fosters peaceful coexistence between different social systems. With the backing of the central government and collaborative efforts from various sectors within Hong Kong and Macao, she expressed confidence that the implementation of “One Country, Two Systems” will continue to thrive, enhancing the regions’ future prospects.
