24th December 2024 – (Tokyo) A fatal incident occurred at the Yakebitaiyama Ski Resort in Nagano Prefecture, Japan, on 22nd December, when a 32-year-old Chinese tourist went missing while skiing. After an extensive search, he was found unconscious off the ski trail and was subsequently pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital.
According to local media reports from Nagano Broadcasting System (NBS) and Nagano Asahi Broadcasting (ABN), the alarm was raised around 3.30pm by the victim’s friends, who reported him missing. Search teams found him at approximately 5.30pm, but by that time, he had already suffered cardiac arrest. Medical personnel at a hospital in Nakano City attempted to revive him, but he succumbed to asphyxiation shortly after midnight on 23rd December.
At the time of the accident, weather conditions included wind and snowfall, with the ski slope where the incident occurred having a steep gradient of up to 39 degrees and uncompressed snow, categorising it as an advanced skiing route. Local authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatality, including whether a skiing mishap led him to veer off the designated path.
Ski enthusiasts have noted that the area has recently experienced “powder snow,” which, while soft and cushioning during falls, can also cause skiers to become trapped in deep snow. According to the Chinese Academy of Sciences, this type of snow can lead to accidental inhalation if a skier falls face-first, increasing the risk of suffocation.
