Chinese tourist smokes on escalator in MOKO shopping mall

1st January 2025 – (Hong Kong) Recently, a video surfaced online featuring a Mainland tourist allegedly smoking on the escalator at MOKO shopping mall in Mong Kok. The footage shows the man puffing smoke as he casually discards ash onto the escalator, while his female companion fails to intervene. Instead, she attempts to waft away the smoke, inadvertently exposing at least three children nearby to second-hand smoke.

The clip, shared in a local Facebook group, has ignited a heated debate. While many condemned the tourist’s blatant disregard for smoking regulations, others criticized the bystander for not speaking up. Comments such as, “Why didn’t anyone confront him immediately?” and “People seem more interested in filming than reminding him,” highlighted the community’s frustration. Some argued that the visitor might not have been aware of Hong Kong’s strict no-smoking laws, suggesting that a gentle reminder could have prevented the situation.

As the video gains traction, the discussion continues, with many asserting that the focus should remain on the smoker’s actions rather than the observer’s choice to record. Under Hong Kong law, smoking in designated non-smoking areas can lead to a fine of HK$1,500, while littering ashes can incur a penalty of up to HK$3,000.
