23rd December 2024 – (Hong Kong) Consumer Council has reported receiving 17 complaints related to a recent event featuring football legends from Real Madrid and Barcelona. Fans paid nearly HK$7,000 for ticket packages, only to find themselves unable to meet the players as promised.

The incident occurred during the “Legends Assemble” exhibition match held on 22nd December at the Hong Kong Stadium. The ticket package, priced at HK$6,880, included entry to the game and an exclusive fan meeting, which was unexpectedly cancelled. A total of 17 complaints have been filed, amounting to HK$125,000, with one notable complaint involving approximately HK$14,000 for two tickets.

Doreen Kong, a Legislative Council member, expressed concerns during a radio interview, stating that the event could negatively impact perceptions of Hong Kong’s ability to host international activities. She emphasised the need for event organisers to ensure that promotional promises are met to maintain the city’s image.

Gilly Wong Fung-han, Chief Executive of the Consumer Council, noted that the complaints indicate a significant consumer grievance. She highlighted the importance of clear communication between fans and organisers, urging them to adopt better practices to prevent similar issues in the future. Wong advised consumers to retain receipts and documentation for any future follow-ups regarding dissatisfaction with events.
