6th January 2025 – (Los Angeles) Demi Moore has made headlines by winning the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for her compelling performance in “The Substance,” a body horror film that delves into the extremes a fading star takes to reclaim her youth. This role marks a significant return for Moore, who gained fame in the ’80s and ’90s and last received a nomination in this category in 1991 for her iconic role in “Ghost.” The classification of both films as comedies is a topic of debate among critics.
Directed by Coralie Fargeat, “The Substance” explores the theme of self-inflicted violence that women often endure. In the film, Moore portrays Elisabeth Sparkle, who consumes a drug that brings forth a younger, more alluring version of herself, played by Margaret Qualley. The two characters must navigate their shared existence, but their inability to respect the delicate balance leads to grotesque consequences.
During her acceptance speech on Sunday night, Moore reflected on the film’s message, stating:
“One thing that I think this movie is imparting is in those moments when we don’t think we’re smart enough, or pretty enough, or skinny enough, or successful enough, or basically just not enough. I had a woman say to me, just, no, you will never be enough, but you can know the value of your worth if you just put down the measuring stick. And so today I celebrate this as a marker of my wholeness and of the love that is driving me. And for the gift of doing something I love and being reminded that I do belong. Thank you so much.”
