27th December 2024 – (Hong Kong) A video circulating online captures two instances of a private car driver near the Yau Ma Tei fruit stalls stealing fruit. The footage reveals that yesterday, at around 1am on the 26th, a white private car was seen driving along Waterloo Road before turning right onto Ferry Street. During this time, numerous boxes of fruit were seemingly placed along the roadside. The private car abruptly stopped, and the male driver, suspected of greed, got out to snatch a box of dragon fruit, placing it in the passenger seat before driving away. The entire incident lasted less than a minute. The netizen expressed dismay, stating, “The state of Hong Kong’s streets is truly appalling; those with cars can steal fruit but can’t afford to buy it.”
While some internet users assert that the driver’s actions constitute theft, especially as the car’s licence plate was captured on camera, they recommend reporting the incident to the authorities and not letting the perpetrator off lightly. However, many online users focus on the issue of individuals consistently placing goods on the streets, leading to obstruction concerns.
