24th December 2024 – (Hong Kong) As Christmas approaches, some Hongkongers have opted for a unique holiday experience by celebrating the festive season in mainland China, drawn in by the spacious locales and cost-effective options available. Although not an official holiday on the mainland, various shopping centres have wholeheartedly embraced the Christmas spirit, adorning their spaces with elaborate decorations and creating themed photo opportunities.
In Nanshan district, MixC World mall has transformed into a winter wonderland, complete with snowy landscapes, majestic Christmas trees, and even hourly artificial snow showers from 3pm to 8pm, offering visitors a magical experience. One Hong Kong resident, a corporate consultant, highlighted the appeal of a tranquil family getaway in Shenzhen, praising the budget-friendly options and the lack of overcrowding compared to the bustling scenes in Hong Kong during the holiday season.
While some have chosen to venture to mainland China for their Christmas celebrations, others have opted to revel in the festivities closer to home in Hong Kong. The city’s iconic shopping hubs like Tsim Sha Tsui saw a surge of activity on Christmas Eve, with both local residents and tourists soaking in the Christmas ambience, enjoying the decor and offerings of the season.
