HYBE boy group member FUMA sparks controversy with insensitive post after Jeju Air disaster

30th December 2024 – (Seoul) In a fatal aviation incident that shook the world, the crash of Jeju Air has resulted in the loss of 179 lives, leaving only 2 crew members as survivors. The gravity of this catastrophe prompted the South Korean government to declare a national mourning period of 7 days, leading to the cancellation of all year-end entertainment activities, including the delay of television variety shows.

Despite the somber atmosphere following the disaster, a member of the HYBE-affiliated boy group, FUMA, sparked controversy by posting a seemingly insensitive photograph on social media, provoking strong backlash from fans who criticised the lack of empathy displayed.

The post in question depicted FUMA making a “V” sign while posing with airplane emojis, mangoes, and coconuts, a stark contrast to the tragic context of the recent aviation disaster. The timing of FUMA’s social media activity, just an hour after the Jeju Air crash, incited heated discussions among followers, leading to the subsequent removal of the contentious post.
