6th January 2025 – (Ottawa) Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has confirmed that he will resign as leader of the Liberal Party, stating that the nation’s parliament will be prorogued until 24th March to facilitate the selection of his successor.

At a press conference in Ottawa, Trudeau explained, “Parliament has been paralyzed for months following the longest session of a minority parliament in Canadian history.” He added that he had advised the Governor General of the need for a new session, which has been granted.

While Trudeau will step down as party leader, he will continue to serve as prime minister in a caretaker role until a new leader is appointed.

This announcement marks a significant moment in Canadian politics, as Trudeau has faced dwindling support following various political controversies, including accusations of racism linked to past blackface incidents and public discontent over vaccine mandates during the pandemic.

Trudeau, the son of former Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau, first entered politics in 2008 and rose to prominence by winning a majority in the 2015 elections. Despite his earlier successes, including re-elections in 2019 and 2021, his popularity has waned in recent years amid political challenges and shifting public sentiment.
