31st December 2024 – (Hong Kong) As 2024 draws to a close, Hong Kong is abuzz with New Year’s Eve festivities today. The highlight of the celebrations is the grand fireworks display over Victoria Harbour. To manage the anticipated crowds, police have implemented phased road closures across various locations, including the waterfront and Lan Kwai Fong. Many visitors from mainland China are expected to return home after enjoying the fireworks.

At 4pm, long queues formed at Peak Tram Lower Terminus , with hundreds of people waiting over an hour to purchase tickets. The area around The Peak Tower was bustling with tourists eager to capture the perfect photo, creating a challenging environment for movement.

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department has also issued a reminder for the public to maintain cleanliness during the celebrations. Those found littering could face fines of up to HK$3,000. Popular gathering spots such as the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Salisbury Garden, and Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront are expected to be crowded, and visitors are advised to follow safety instructions from staff.

Additionally, MTR services will run throughout the night, with extended hours for the East Rail Line to facilitate travel to the Lo Wu border crossing, which will remain open until 2am. The last train from Admiralty to Lo Wu will depart just before midnight, ensuring a smooth return for those celebrating the New Year.
