28th December 2024 – (Hefei) Luckin Coffee, a prominent coffee chain from mainland China, has faced scrutiny after a consumer reported discovering a cockroach in their drink. The incident, which occurred on 20th December, involved Mr Chen from Hefei, who claimed that he found what appeared to be a cockroach after purchasing coffee through the Luckin app. He stated that the beverage had been left in his car for several hours before the discovery, leading him to believe the insect had been steeping in the drink for a considerable time.
In response to the allegations, Luckin Coffee conducted a thorough investigation, asserting that the store in question adhered strictly to operational protocols and had complete pest control records. A third-party inspection reportedly found no evidence of cockroaches or other pests at the location.
Despite the company’s assurance, the incident has raised questions about hygiene practices, prompting Mr Chen to seek confirmation of the café’s cleanliness standards. After reviewing surveillance footage and confirming that proper procedures were followed, he decided to withdraw his complaint, expressing a desire for improved hygiene rather than compensation.
As Luckin Coffee opens five branches in Hong Kong today, including locations at Mira Place in Tsim Sha Tsui and MCP Central in Tseung Kwan O, the company aims to enhance its reputation amid this controversy. The new outlets will adopt a grab-and-go model, integrating mobile ordering and payment to cater to the fast-paced lifestyle of local consumers.
Founded in 2017, Luckin Coffee has rapidly expanded, recently surpassing Starbucks in net revenue within China. As it enters the Hong Kong market, the brand will be keen to reassure customers of its commitment to quality and hygiene, ensuring that incidents like the recent cockroach discovery do not tarnish its reputation.
