23rd December 2024 – (New York) Luigi Mangione pleaded not guilty to state charges in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson during an arraignment at a New York City court on Monday. Mangione’s defence team expressed concern over the handling of his case by law enforcement, criticising the police for conducting what they described as “perp walks” that are “perfectly choreographed” and politically motivated.

Dressed in a white shirt beneath a maroon sweater and light-coloured trousers, Mangione appeared before Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Gregory Carro. Last week, Manhattan prosecutors unveiled an 11-count indictment against him, detailing a range of charges related to the December 4 slaying.

The charges include first-degree murder, acts of terrorism, criminal possession of a weapon, and forgery for allegedly using a fake ID in the days leading up to the murder. Mangione’s plea of not guilty was recorded in response to all counts.

Defence attorney Karen Agnifilo raised concerns about the potential for an unfair trial, attributing the heightened publicity to law enforcement’s actions. She accused Mayor Eric Adams of facilitating these public displays, which she deemed “absolutely unnecessary” and detrimental to the presumption of innocence.

“The mayor should know more than anyone about the presumption of innocence,” Agnifilo stated, highlighting the defence’s concerns regarding the influence of media coverage on the judicial process.
