6th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) Lawyer Mary Jean Reimer recently discussed the infamous Braemar Hill murders during her YouTube programme “Dangerous Individuals 2.0”. She disclosed that Pang Shun-yee, the primary perpetrator in the 1985 case, was released from prison in 2016 after serving a 30-year sentence.
The Braemar Hill murders shocked Hong Kong when British teenagers Kenneth McBride, 17, and his girlfriend Nicola Myers, 18, were brutally attacked by a group of five young men. McBride was found bound, beaten, and ultimately strangled, while Myers suffered horrific injuries, including sexual assault, before her death.
Reimer revealed that, just two weeks prior to the murders, Pang had violently assaulted the wife of a foreign police officer, an incident for which he was never prosecuted. She expressed concern over Pang’s release, arguing that the severity of his crimes warranted a much longer sentence. “Two lives lost should equal at least 20 years each; releasing him after 30 years feels excessively lenient,” Reimer stated, urging authorities to implement measures to inform the public regarding the release of violent offenders.
The original crime scene, where McBride and Myers had been studying, was marked by extreme brutality, with both victims sustaining hundreds of injuries. The shocking details of the case prompted widespread media attention and public outrage, leading to an extensive police investigation that ultimately resulted in the arrest of Pang and his accomplices.
The release of Pang has reignited discussions about the judicial system’s handling of violent offenders and the need for transparency regarding their reintegration into society.
