22nd December 2024 – (Shenzhen) A 53-year-old man in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, has lost his hearing after developing meningitis, reportedly linked to consuming undercooked pork. The individual, referred to as “Lao Zhan” in local reports, sought medical attention after experiencing severe symptoms that escalated from what he initially believed to be a common cold.
Three months prior to seeking treatment, Lao Zhan had prepared a meal using pork and vegetables he retrieved from his refrigerator. The following day, he began to suffer from headaches and fever. Assuming it was merely a cold, he took painkillers and rested. However, his condition deteriorated, leading to confusion, tremors, muscle pain, significant hearing loss, instability while walking, and severe vomiting.
Medical professionals diagnosed Lao Zhan with meningitis caused by the bacteria Streptococcus suis, commonly found in undercooked pork. Following a rigorous treatment regimen involving antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication, his meningitis symptoms improved. Unfortunately, inflammation in the inner ear resulted in damage to the cochlea and hair cells, culminating in profound sensorineural hearing loss.
Ultimately, Lao Zhan underwent cochlear implantation to restore his hearing, and he has reportedly been recovering well post-surgery. Doctors have issued strong warnings about the importance of personal protective measures when handling raw meat to prevent bacterial infections.
