Mozambique faces unrest following election dispute as alternative border route via eSwatini established

22nd December 2024 – (Maputo) In response to escalating violence in Mozambique, authorities are implementing a plan to facilitate the movement of vehicles and pedestrians through eSwatini, should the Lebombo border be closed. This decision comes as tensions rise surrounding the announcement of election results, with fears that unrest may deepen.

The Border Management Authority has designated the Mananga border gate as an alternative route to mitigate potential disruptions. Officials have announced that operational hours at this border will be extended during this diversion period.

At the heart of the unrest is Venancio Mondlane, a prominent opposition leader currently directing protests from exile. Mondlane, who claims to have won the October presidential election, has rejected the electoral commission’s assertion that the ruling Frelimo party’s candidate, Daniel Chapo, received 71 percent of the vote. Instead, Mondlane insists that the election was rigged, positioning himself as the rightful victor with a purported 53 per cent.

In the two months following the election, at least 130 people have reportedly died, predominantly opposition supporters who were shot by security forces. The violence has affected major urban areas, mines, and transportation hubs, raising alarm among local NGOs and international observers alike.

Mondlane’s charismatic style and sharp critique of the Frelimo government have resonated with many citizens grappling with poverty and inequality in Mozambique, a nation rich in resources yet struggling economically. Political analysts suggest that Mondlane represents the most significant challenge to Frelimo’s authority since it gained power nearly five decades ago, making him a pivotal figure in the current political landscape.

As the Constitutional Council prepares to announce its decision regarding the election results, the situation remains volatile. Mondlane has pledged to instigate chaos if his claims are not recognised, intensifying the stakes in an already fraught environment.

Political observers note that Mondlane’s rise has disrupted the long-standing political arrangement in Mozambique, where Frelimo has historically manipulated electoral outcomes to maintain control. His emergence as a legitimate challenger marks a turning point in the country’s political dynamics, with significant implications for its future stability.
