26th December 2024 – (Hong Kong) Judd Trump has officially taken up residency in Hong Kong, following in the footsteps of fellow player Ronnie O’Sullivan. Trump’s residency was confirmed this week after he successfully navigated the Quality Migrant Admission Scheme, a programme designed to attract skilled professionals to the region.
O’Sullivan, who established his residency just two months prior, expressed little surprise at Trump’s decision, noting the appeal of Hong Kong’s favourable tax environment. While foreign nationals are still subject to income tax, the rates in Hong Kong are among the lowest in developed economies, making it an attractive option for many expatriates.
During a recent interview, O’Sullivan remarked, “It makes sense since [Trump’s] girlfriend is from Hong Kong. He likes being here more than the UK.” He also indicated a desire to enhance the profile of snooker in Hong Kong by establishing clubs and academies to nurture local talent.
Trump’s relationship with Hong Kong figure skater Maisy Ma Hiu-ching has played a pivotal role in his decision to relocate. He received his Hong Kong identity card on 23 December, marking a new chapter in his career as he seeks to deepen his ties to the city. “I want to make her proud, as well as my family,” Trump stated, highlighting the personal motivations that have shaped his recent resurgence in performance.
The pair’s relationship began at the 2022 Masters in Hong Kong, and despite initial challenges posed by distance, their reconnection this year has solidified Trump’s commitment to the region. As he prepares for the upcoming 2024 Macau Snooker Masters, Trump is optimistic about blending his professional ambitions with his personal life in Hong Kong, further establishing his presence in the vibrant local community.
