South Korean court rejects President Yoon Suk Yeol’s bid to halt arrest warrant

5th January 2025 – (Seoul) The Seoul Western District Court rejected a request from South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol to suspend the execution of an arrest warrant and a search warrant that he had challenged earlier in the week. This decision intensifies the ongoing political turmoil surrounding Yoon, who has been embroiled in controversy since his failed declaration of martial law last month.

Yoon had submitted his objections to the court on 2nd January, seeking to block the execution of the legal orders. However, the court’s dismissal of his plea adds further pressure on the embattled leader, who has faced significant political backlash and calls for accountability.

The arrest warrant remains valid until 6th January and could potentially be extended. Investigators from the Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) attempted to enforce the warrant but faced significant resistance, including a blockade by security forces at the presidential compound.

Yoon is under investigation for multiple allegations, including insurrection, which carries severe penalties. His refusal to comply with previous summonses from investigators has only heightened tensions, leading to a politically charged atmosphere as supporters and opponents gather outside the presidential residence.
