27th December 2024 – (Hong Kong) The Sunbeam Theatre, a landmark venue in North Point renowned for showcasing Cantonese opera, will cease operations on 3rd March 2025. In anticipation of its closure, a charity fundraising gala featuring Cantonese performances will be held by a non-profit organisation in February.
Established over 50 years ago, the theatre has been a vital space for the Cantonese opera community, leading to fears about the availability of suitable performance venues following its shutdown. Notable figures in the opera scene have expressed regret over the impending closure, with many fans purchasing tickets to attend final performances as a nostalgic farewell.
Cantonese opera star Gai Ming-fai noted that the Sunbeam Theatre is the only large private theatre on Hong Kong Island, making it a unique venue for performances. She acknowledged that while the closure would significantly impact self-sustaining troupes, the overall effect on Cantonese opera might not be as severe. Gai emphasised that, despite various government-supported venues, none could replicate the theatre’s distinctive nostalgic charm, which resonates deeply with the traditional art form.
The theatre’s decor, featuring red sofas, a grand lobby, and vintage yellow lighting, captures the essence of 1950s and 60s Hong Kong, making it a cherished location for many theatre-goers. Regular attendees have lamented the loss of a venue that felt like “home,” while others, including overseas residents, have made special trips to capture memories of the iconic space, expressing hope for the preservation of Hong Kong’s traditional Cantonese opera heritage.
