7th January 2025 – (Washington) U.S. President-elect Donald Trump reacted on Monday to the announcement of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation, reinforcing his controversial proposal for Canada to become the 51st state of the United States. In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump stated, “Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State. The United States can no longer suffer the massive trade deficits and subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew this, and resigned.”
Previously, Trump had threatened to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian imports, but this time he suggested that merging Canada with the U.S. would eliminate tariffs and significantly reduce taxes. He proclaimed, “What a great Nation it would be!!!”
Trudeau’s resignation, announced during a press conference in Ottawa, follows increasing domestic political pressure and Trump’s ongoing jests about Canada’s status. Trudeau indicated his intention to step down as party leader and prime minister, pending the selection of his successor through a nationwide competitive process by his Liberal Party.
Trump’s comments coincided with the U.S. Congress convening to certify his victory in the 2024 presidential election, with his inauguration as the 47th president set for 20th January.
