8th January 2025 – (Florida) In a lively press conference held at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, Donald Trump, the incoming U.S. president, discussed a variety of topics following the official certification of his election victory by Congress. This marks his first press conference since the election.
Trump took aim at his opponents, expressing frustration over what he termed “lawfare,” which he describes as the misuse of the judicial system for political gain. He stated, “They’ve been playing with the courts for four years… It’s called lawfare, it’s called weaponization of justice.”
Accompanying Trump was Steven Witkoff, his nominee for special envoy to the Middle East. When questioned about efforts to secure the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas, Trump warned, “If they’re not back by the time I get into office, all hell will break out in the Middle East,” adding that it would not bode well for Hamas.
In a controversial move, Trump announced intentions to pardon some individuals involved in the January 6 Capitol riots, claiming many faced unjust persecution simply for their presence at the event. “People that didn’t even walk into the building are in jail right now. So we’ll be looking at the whole thing but I’ll be making major pardons,” he stated.
House Democrats, who previously led the impeachment proceedings against Trump concerning the 6th January events, cautioned that such pardons could have serious consequences, a sentiment echoed by some Republicans.
Trump also revived discussions about potentially taking control of the Panama Canal and Greenland, both of which he linked to U.S. national security. When asked if he would consider military action to achieve these aims, he did not rule it out. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen responded firmly, stating, “Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders.”
Additionally, Trump urged NATO allies to increase their defence spending from the current 2% of GDP to 5%, reiterating his criticism of member nations not contributing their fair share.
In a bid to reverse outgoing President Joe Biden’s offshore drilling ban, Trump announced plans to take immediate action. He also revealed that Emirati billionaire Hussain Sajwani would invest $20 billion to establish data centres across the U.S.
Experts, however, expressed skepticism regarding many of Trump’s proposals. Clay Ramsay from the Center for International and Security Studies likened Trump’s press conference to “chaff,” a distraction tactic that obscures clear direction. Darrell West of the Brookings Institution noted that many of Trump’s ideas, such as acquiring Greenland or controlling the Panama Canal, lack support both internationally and locally, and suggested that he should focus on pressing domestic concerns.
