23rd December 2024 – (Hong Kong) A serious traffic accident occurred early on Monday, in Sham Shui Po, when a private car struck a garbage truck driver, sending him approximately ten metres away from the point of impact. The incident took place around midnight as the vehicle was travelling along Tai Nan Street towards Mong Kok, near a refuse collection point.
The injured man, approximately 68 years old and working as a subcontracted garbage truck driver, was reportedly in a semi-conscious state when paramedics arrived. He was later transported to Princess Margaret Hospital.
Initial reports suggest that the driver of the private car exhibited unsteady behaviour upon exiting the vehicle after the collision. Police discovered over a dozen “space oil” vape cartridges in the car, prompting a drug test for the driver, who was subsequently arrested.
Witnesses indicated that the driver had just dropped off several colleagues at the refuse collection site and had parked the truck with part of it protruding into the adjacent lane due to the presence of large trash bins. The accident occurred when he was crossing from the driver’s side to the passenger side of the truck and was struck by a “SMART” car.
Police are conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, while the driver of the private vehicle, identified as a 44-year-old man, faces charges of dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm and possession of a controlled substance. He is currently in custody for further questioning.
