3rd January 2025 – (Seoul) South Korean anti-corruption investigators faced a major challenge while attempting to enforce an unprecedented arrest warrant for President Yoon Suk Yeol at his residence in Seoul today. The operation involved around 80 personnel from the Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) and police, who were met with resistance from the presidential security team, resulting in a lengthy standoff that lasted for approximately 5.5 hours.
The confrontation began in the early morning when investigators arrived at the presidential compound to execute the arrest warrant. Despite their efforts, they were blocked by security personnel and soldiers, leading to physical confrontations. The situation intensified, prompting the police to deploy additional officers to assist in the operation.
At around 10am, investigators managed to breach the first two lines of security within the residence, but were met with further resistance at the main building. They presented the arrest warrant to the head of the presidential security team, who refused to comply, citing national security laws.
This unprecedented action against a sitting president comes in the wake of Yoon’s controversial declaration of martial law, which he issued last month. Following widespread backlash and a parliamentary vote stripping him of his presidential powers, Yoon has been under investigation for several serious allegations, including leading an insurrection.
Despite the standoff, a significant number of Yoon’s supporters gathered outside the residence, showing their loyalty even in frigid conditions. Many carried signs accusing investigators of treason and called for the arrest of the CIO.
As the situation escalated without resolution, the CIO announced the suspension of the arrest attempt around 1.30pm, citing the ongoing confrontation as a reason for halting their actions.
